Nordic walking and sarcopenia

Sarcopenia is the lost of muscle mass/strength as we age. In one study, 45 women with osteopenia or osteoporosis:

  • Increased skeletal muscle mass, skeletal muscle index, strength index of the knee extensor and flexor, functional mobility, and functional performance.
  • Decreased body mass, body mass index, and percent body fat.

The researchers concluded there was potential for Nordic walking as an intervention to help those with osteopenia or osteoporosis.
